Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of our dental services near Naperville. They are metal posts that are surgically positioned in your mouth—in the jawbone—and beneath your gums in order for your dentist to be able to mount replacement teeth on them.

What Are Implants Made Of?

A dental implant is a titanium post, so it shouldn’t come loose like a denture can. They are a benefit to your overall oral health as they do not have to be anchored to your teeth.

The Two Types Of Implants

The two most common types of dental implants are endosteal and subperiosteal. Ask your dentist about the two different options and which one will work best for you.

  • Endosteal: These are made of titanium and shaped like small screws. They’re the most commonly used as they’re placed in the jawbone and protrude through the gum to be able to hold the replacement tooth or teeth.
  • Subperiosteal: If your jawbone isn’t healthy enough to support the endosteal implants, subperiosteal may be recommended for you. They are placed on the jawbone instead of in and under the gum to protrude through the gum.

How Do They Work?

Unlike dentures, dental implants are fused to your jawbone to provide stable support for your new and artificial teeth, making them feel natural and real. This can benefit you when it comes to eating all kinds of foods and speaking.

Tips For Those With Dental Implants

Dental implants are successful most of the time, but it’s important to keep your new and remaining teeth in excelling condition to have a wonderful smile for years, or even decades, to come.

  • Continue to practice good oral hygiene: Just like you did with your natural teeth, keep your implants clean by brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and floss daily. Make sure you are cleaning around the gums, and brush your tongue as well.
  • See your dentist bi-yearly or as needed: Make sure you see us regularly for dental checkups and cleanings to make sure that your implants are functioning properly and allowing us to make necessary changes.
  • Avoid damaging habits that will affect your new teeth: Don’t chew on hard items or foods because it can break down your crowns. Also, avoid tooth-staining tobacco and caffeine as they can stain your natural and artificial teeth.
